My name is Martin ( @theuniversityblog.co.uk ) and I rather like higher education. If I can find an angle on the academic, I’m interested. I was greedy and had a wealth of university experience both before and after my own time as an undergraduate. The first knockings of my uni-fest started in the 1996/7 academic year and I was still embracing academia until the 2002/3 year. It ended at that point due to various aspects of the outside world catching up with me…I got married, I started a full-time job that was non-university related, my last main group of uni friends were leaving that year, etc., etc.
During the time that I was officially deemed a student (1998-2001), I didn’t just leave it at studying and socialising. Among other things, I:
- Became a Senior Student
- Was elected a Final Year Rep
- Helped in founding an English Society
I didn’t much like to sit still.
And here we are again. In October 2007, I returned to a focus on higher education. And not just with this blog, either. I have been working within HE and hope to stick around for quite some time. Here’s hoping I serve academia proudly. Bring it on!
But no university would be such an institution without YOU, the students. So I decided it would be a good idea to get involved at all possible angles (if that’s physically possible). One of my bright ideas was to start this blog. Now for the hard part…to make it work well.

Thanks very much for the kind comments.
@Ron, the image I use is some graffiti I saw on my travels when I was with a load of uni friends. So it reminds me – in its quirky, indirect way – of university every time I look at it.

I like your tweets and thanks for the Coldplay / REM track tip. Decided to do a bit of stalking and found this page. I finished a masters last year and did a knowledge catalyst scheme in new media field last year sponsored by arts council. I miss the higher education buzz, when I get bored of work will no doubt go and do a phd.

And after the PhD…lecturer?
Thanks for the kind words, Matthew. Yeah, the HE buzz is a good one that’s sometimes overlooked. And it’s worthwhile in so many ways! Glad you enjoyed it and look forward to maybe welcoming you back to the land of HE one day…

Hi Martin,
It has been a long time. Do get in touch when you can. Would love to feature this blog on the new upgraded website we’re bringing out, and could also do with some advice on research.
Take care,
Samuel
